Caring For A Needy World With The Things We Throw Away

Matthew 25 Ministries

If you’re like me then you have probably gone through so many pill bottles you couldn’t even count them if you wanted to. Prescription bottles, Advil bottles, allergy medicine bottles, etc. Living in a 1st world nation we throw away tons of pill bottles. But what if you could donate them instead? There are plenty of programs and organizations that have thought creatively on how they can reuse your bottles, I think I’ve even seen some Pharmacies that will take empty bottles back. It’s not just about recycling to help the planet it’s about helping others.

Often in developing countries pills are wrapped in scraps of paper which provides no protection from moisture or germs. And can be easy for children to get into. By donating your bottles you’re not only keeping the plastic out of landfills and whatnot, but you’re helping provide something that is greatly needed for some people.

Matthew 25 Ministries is one of these organizations. They are “an international humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization helping the poorest of the poor and disaster victims locally, regionally, nationally and internationally regardless of race, creed or political persuasion. By rescuing and reusing products from major corporations and manufacturers, Matthew 25: Ministries provides basic necessities, nutritional supplements, educational materials, micro-enterprise supplies and disaster relief across the US and worldwide.”

Our pill bottle program fulfills the dual needs of improving medical care in developing countries and caring for our environment.

If you wish to prepare bottles for shipment rather than recycling, please follow these guidelines:

  • Bottles included in shipments of medical supplies must have an all plastic lid.
  • Sort bottles by color and type.
  • Remove labels, leaving no glue or residue.
  • Wash bottles in very hot water and dish soap.
  • Rinse and dry thoroughly.
  • Replace lids on clean, dried bottles.
  • Place clean, recapped bottles in large ziplock bags marked “Clean Bottles.” These will be blended with medical supplies.
