Door hangers and wreaths are very trendy right now and they can be quite expensive to buy. So, why not make your own? Take some time to zen out, get creative, and make your own wreath or door hanger. Here’s one cute door hanger you can make that is very low cost.
Supplies
- Artificial flowers
- Thin sticks/twigs
- Cardboard or wire coat hanger
- Ribbon
- Hot glue gun/glue
- Scissors or wire cutters
Instructions
- To start off decide how big you want your door hanger to be. Once you’ve got the size figured out you will need to make your frame. This is what you’ll be gluing your sticks to. You can either bend your coat hanger to those dimensions or cut some pieces of cardboard to those dimensions. I used cardboard because I don’t have any wire coat hangers.
- Now, you’ll need to cut your sticks to meet your dimensions going horizontal. I used these natural sticks from the floral section at Hobby Lobby. I had them left over from a floral arrangement I put together several years ago.
- Once you’ve got all your sticks cut you can start gluing them down to your frame.
It can get a little annoying sometimes because the sticks might pop up from the glue. So, hold them down until the glue has dried before moving on to the next stick.
- To give it a little extra strength I also added some glue on the back along the edge of the frame and sticks. This is optional but it does help.
- Now time for flowers. For this little project I used some that I got at Dollar Tree, but you can get some nicer ones at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. It’s best if you arrange them first before gluing them down. This way you get an idea of how you want them to look. But if you want you can just wing it. Let your creativity run free and see what happens. Enjoy this chance to relax and create something beautiful.
- I added a few extra pieces of cardboard at the top of my frame because I ran out or room. So, if that happens to you, just cut a few short strips of cardboard and glue them to the top of your sticks.
- It’s time to start gluing your flowers down. And if you want you can add some ribbon around the basket with a bow. It just depends on what you want your basket to look like and if you’ve got room on your basket for it.
- To add the ribbon, measure how far down the door you want it to hang and add a couple of inches to that. Those couple of inches will give you extra to attach to your basket. Cut your ribbon and glue it to the back of your basket.
