TODAY IS EARTH DAY!

This years theme is “Restore our Earth.” You can check the earthday.org website to find events taking place near you! This is a great time of year to educate others, especially kids, about recycling, reusing, conservation, restoration, climate, pollution, living green, etc.

Protecting and taking care of our environment is crucial for providing a beautiful future for our children. We need to be promoting an understanding of important environmental issues so that more people are aware of the critical actions we need to take to protect our environment. It doesn’t have to be a big event or pass a new law it can be as simple as planting a tree, cleaning up a stream or helping out in your local community garden.

“A simple way that everyone can celebrate Earth Day to make the world a better place is to turn off the lights in their own homes and in their offices … not just sometimes, but all of the time,” said Helene King, a member of the LifeBridge Health hospitals’ Health Green Team in Baltimore. “It may sound simple, but how many times have you left the lights on when you could be saving energy?”

Here’s a fun DIY craft project that’s great for Earth Day.

Supplies

  • Clay
  • Leaves
  • Plastic sheet (like shower curtain)
  • Rolling pin or something you can use to flatten your clay
  • Knife
  • Small bowl or a glass

Instructions

  1. Start off by making sure your work area is clean. You will probably want to use some sort of plastic sheet like a shower curtain. I just used a simple Ziploc bag since I was using a small area.
  2. Roll out your clay

  1. Select the pieces you want to use and lay them out on the clay until you are happy with the arrangement.

  1. Using your rolling tool (I used a big jar) roll over the clay, gently pressing down so that the pieces create an impression in the clay.
  1. Get creative and form other shapes. Use a knife or cookie cutters to make some fun shapes.

  1. Now the tricky part, picking up the pieces off the clay. I used an X-acto knife to carefully lift the leaves up off the clay.
  1. You can also use bowls or glasses to help form the clay.
  1. Depending on the type of clay you’re using you’ll either let air dry or dry in the oven. Follow the instructions on your package. Mine was air day.

This is such a fun project! You can do it for yourself, make it a gift, or do it with the kids. Hey, Mothers Day is coming up… hint hint. Get creative with your design. Add some paint to brighten it up. Make it your own. Make it a small jewelry dish, or poke a hole in it while the clay is still soft and use it as an ornament. Put a layer of ModPodge over it and use it as a coaster. It really is a fun versatile project.

If you’ve done some of your own post some photos in the comments!
